August-September 2011

Have convinced hubby to find some nice 3mtr x 1.5 mtr pallets and started to box out the 'top end'. He managed to acquire some thick plywood which we used for the sides. Ground is still quite solid, after lifting the black sheet off it's killed all but the most persistent weeds and couch grass. Dad gave me one of his sharp 5 prong forks and i've been steaming ahead! Now almost half the 30ish metre plot has been tidied it's looking manageagle. Also bought a cheap plastic tent style greenhouse from Aldi, £34.99 and 2 mini cloches from poundstretchers.

I have been thinking of how to keep the 'lower' end weed free but keep the soil workable, and after some searching I think green manure would be good. Not too sure which ones so I am going for a mix of Italian rye grass, clover, alfalfa and forage pea.

Had a huge amount of Plums this year, but trees are full of bugs in the fruit and brown rot, so I've had a major trim back (trees, not me).
